A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Theatre in the Forest, Jimmy’s Farm, 4th August

I’ve been to a Theatre in the Forest production just once before, that was for the Comedy of Errors last year so I was eager to attend once again. It’s a great night, always reliable yet never predictable. The kind of performance that has you in stitches and gasping for breath. With just 8 actors there are many a quick costume change to cover all of the characters; I don’t know how they have the energy to do this twice a day for over a month in summer. It was an absolutely gorgeous evening to have a performance under the canopy of trees, the forest floor your stage and the lighting becoming increasingly intense as the night draws on. The actors created a very interactive experience for the audience with some particularly impressive tree work or involving us during dialogue; be that through chit chat about a fellow character or using someone’s phone to take a selfie with the crowd. The way that these kind of things are seamlessly blended into the performance made it all the more hilarious. Even with regular attendees to these productions I see the appeal in coming back each year, it’s interesting and great fun to see their rendition of a classic piece of theatre.
